16-year-old girl dies, two other teens injured in Clare County crash

CLARE COUNTY, Michigan — Investigators say excessive speed is to blame for a violent crash that claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl and injured two other teenagers Saturday night in Redding Township.

According to the Clare County Sheriff’s Office, a 17-year-old girl from Marion was behind the wheel of a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder traveling along Kirby Avenue, just north of Stockwell Road, when she lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.

Passenger Ejected After Not Wearing Seatbelt

Officials confirmed that the 16-year-old female passenger was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The impact caused her to be thrown from the vehicle.

Bystanders and emergency responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two Teens Hospitalized

The driver and another passenger — a 16-year-old boy — were both injured and transported by ambulance to Munson Medical Center in Cadillac. Authorities have not released details about their injuries, and their conditions remain unavailable.

Speed Believed to Be a Factor

Sheriff’s deputies said the driver was likely speeding when she lost control of the vehicle. The case remains under investigation, and findings will be forwarded to the Clare County Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.
