MANSFIELD, Ohio — A tragic incident unfolded in Mansfield on Monday after a 9-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man were found with gunshot wounds inside a home on the 900 block of Woodville Road, according to the Mansfield Division of Police.
Officers responded just after noon and discovered both individuals suffering from critical injuries. Authorities reported that the 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 9-year-old child was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Police have not yet released their identities.
Neighbors expressed heartbreak as investigators worked at the scene.
“No child deserves this. Children should be out here living their lives. When you see a baby being carried out like that — especially when you have grandkids of your own — it really affects you,” one resident said.
Although early findings suggest the case may have been a murder-suicide, officials emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing.
In a statement, police said detectives are working closely with the Richland County Coroner’s Office to determine a clear timeline of events and the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
Authorities have not disclosed additional details as the investigation continues.
