PIQUA, Ohio – City officials in Piqua are preparing to honor a local man whose extraordinary bravery saved a life moments after a powerful home explosion rocked a neighborhood.
On Tuesday, November 18, Julio DeLeon was near the intersection of Covington and McKinley Avenues when an explosion tore through a nearby home, igniting a massive fire. Without hesitation, DeLeon sprinted into the burning structure after realizing the homeowner was still trapped inside.
A nearby resident managed to capture the dramatic rescue on camera, showing DeLeon pulling the injured man from the flames before emergency crews arrived. Witnesses say DeLeon stayed by the victim’s side, ensuring he was safe until first responders took over.
City leaders say his actions were nothing short of heroic.
“This is an opportunity to show our gratitude and support for a local hero whose actions exemplify the best of our community,” said Kathy Hostetter, president of the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce.
For his courage and selflessness, DeLeon will receive the Jan Mulder Citizenship Award on Tuesday, December 9, during the City Commission meeting.
A Tribute Rooted in Sacrifice
The award holds deep meaning for the Piqua community. It is named after Officer Jan Mulder, a Piqua police officer who was fatally shot on August 11, 1970, while confronting a suspicious individual at the Fort Piqua Hotel. Despite being gravely wounded, Mulder managed to stop the attacker, preventing further loss of life.
In his honor, the Piqua Chamber of Commerce created the Jan Mulder Citizenship Award to recognize individuals who demonstrate exceptional courage and humanity during moments of crisis.

As the city prepares to recognize DeLeon, residents say his bravery reflects the strong sense of community that defines Piqua. What could have been a tragic loss became a story of hope — all because one man chose to run toward danger instead of away from it.
