18-Year-Old Burger King Worker Killed While Trying to Break Up Fight in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WJXT) — An 18-year-old fast-food employee was shot and killed Saturday while working his shift at a Burger King in Jacksonville, according to investigators.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the victim, Matthew Jackson, was attempting to break up a fight between two men inside the restaurant when gunfire erupted.

Suspect Walks In and Confrontation Begins

Authorities say the suspected gunman, Dawud Burritt, entered the Burger King and began arguing with another man identified as Ray Cummings. The verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical altercation.

Jackson stepped in to separate the two men, but during the struggle Burritt pulled out a gun.

Police said customers and employees ran for cover as the suspect opened fire.

Two Shots Fired, Suspect Flees

Witnesses told officers they heard two gunshots before seeing Burritt run out of the restaurant.

When police entered the building, they found Matthew Jackson dead from gunshot injuries. Cummings was also found at the scene with injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Suspect Arrested and Charged

Burritt was taken into custody shortly afterward. Jacksonville authorities say he is facing:

  • Two counts of second-degree murder

  • One count of armed burglary

Victim Was Weeks Away From Life Goals

Jackson’s family said they were preparing to spend Thanksgiving together. His mother shared that he was a senior at Riverside High School and had planned to join the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation.

Investigators Looking Into Motive

Detectives are still piecing together the timeline of events. Cummings told investigators that he and Burritt had a falling out about a year ago, though the reason behind the conflict remains unclear.
