DENVER (KDVR) — The vehicle that triggered a deadly crash that killed five people Monday night near Franktown was reported stolen an hour before the incident, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP).
The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Colorado Highway 83, just south of Franktown in Douglas County. Authorities initially reported that three vehicles were involved, but later clarified that the third vehicle was not damaged.
How the Crash Happened
CSP said the driver of a Toyota Matrix — the vehicle reported stolen — lost control while traveling south. The car went off the right side of the road, then swerved back onto the roadway, rolled, and entered the northbound lane, where it struck a Ford Fusion carrying five children.
The Matrix driver, a 31-year-old Denver man whose name has not been released, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He died at the scene.
The Matrix had been reported stolen through the Aurora Police Department earlier that Monday at around 3:30 p.m.
Investigators have not yet determined what caused the driver to lose control.
Victims
In addition to the Matrix driver, four people inside the Ford Fusion were killed: the 31-year-old driver and three children between 8 and 12 years old. Two other juveniles, aged 13 and 14, were airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
All occupants of the Fusion were from Colorado Springs.
Investigation
Colorado Highway 83 was closed for several hours following the crash and reopened shortly before midnight.
The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating. Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not yet spoken to investigators is asked to contact CSP Dispatch at 303-239-4501 and reference case number VC250439.
The Douglas County Coroner will release the identities of those killed once next of kin have been notified.
